Assignment #1 Blog Post

Why Design?
Artists all have their trade; they paint, the sculpt, they turn the clearest liquid into something vibrant, and some of us design. While art is not my major, it really is the key to releasing all of your built up energy and turning it into something beautiful. I am interested in design because it is random and abstract while having a system to hold it all together. I like to look at a design and see that it is truly unique, not just another apple or a flower, but something fresh; a pattern that only I have created. I have absolutely no experience in design (outside of doodling all over my class notes), so I have set some goals for myself to complete this quarter.

First, I would like to be able to fully utilize Adobe Illustrator CS5
In order to accomplish this, I need to:
Practice in the GRCC lab, a lot.
Watch some tutorials online for tips on how to improve.
Create mini assignments for myself, to make designs using specific tools.
Use every tool and every swatch/brush/etc available in some sort of design.

Second, I would like to stretch my creativity and have diversity in my designs
In order to accomplish this, I need to:
Get started on goal one, and apply it to every design.
Visit museums and/or research other artworks to draw inspiration.
Spend a good amount of time on each design, and explore all of the possibilities.

Thirdly, I would like to learn to be less critical of my artwork.
In order to accomplish this, I need to:
Understand that art is art, and that nothing can ever be perfect.
Design something with my eyes closed, print it out and hang it up in my room.
Create designs while listening to dramatic music, without editing.
Spend some time without "Ctrl Z"
